4 Steps for Using a Storage Unit

Oct 31, 2022

Renting a personal storage unit is a great way to maximize your flexibility during a move. If you’re getting ready to put some or all of your belongings into a self-storage unit and it’s your first time using a storage facility, here are a few steps that can help make the transition more efficient.

What Should You Do When Packing a Storage Unit?

1. Take Inventory

Taking an inventory of all the items you plan to store gives you an idea of what size unit to rent and how long it will take to complete the move. It will also help you stay organized and keep track of everything in the unit throughout the process.

2. Disassemble Furniture

If you are planning to store furniture, disassemble anything that easily comes apart. This will make the pieces easier to transport and fit into the unit, and it will allow more items to fit into the given space than if the furniture were stored fully assembled. Keep records of how the pieces go back together, such as taking photos during the disassembly process, so they can be reassembled easily after being taken out of storage.

3. Safely Store Fragile Items

Pack glass and other breakable items with bubble wrap, paper, or towels, and label the boxes as fragile while you’re preparing to move. In the self-storage unit, stack boxes that contain sturdy or nonbreakable items on the bottom and place the fragile boxes on the top. This will protect them from being crushed by heavier boxes or belongings that might be stacked or fall on them.

4. Stack Strategically

Identify boxes that contain items you will want to access soon. For example, it can be frustrating to need sheets for the mattress in your new place and then realize they’re at the back of the unit behind thirty other boxes. Label boxes of quick-access items ahead of time and reserve the space at the front of the unit so you can reach them quickly when they're needed.
