Do's & Don'ts of Self-Storage Use

Oct 31, 2022

A self-storage unit provides a convenient place for items you want to keep but don’t currently have space or the need for. If you rented a storage unit recently for the first time or plan to rent one soon, there are a few do’s and don’ts to be mindful of. Review them here to keep your belongings intact and avoid problems with the storage facility.

Do:

Pick the best unit size.

A unit that is too small creates a cramped storage space that can damage fragile belongings. Conversely, a self-storage unit that is too big wastes money. To ensure you select the right space for your needs, review the facility’s unit sizes and compare them to what you’re storing. If you’re storing the contents of one room, for example, you’ll want a unit that’s 5x5 to 5x10 square feet. Storing up to five rooms’ worth of furnishings typically requires a unit between 10x20 and 10x30 square feet.

Work with stackable plastic bins.

Cardboard boxes of varying sizes are difficult to stack and easy for pests to gnaw through. They are also susceptible to water damage in the event of flooding. Same-size plastic bins with sealable lids are stackable for efficient unit usage. Consider clear bins that allow you to see their contents. However, it’s still a good idea to slip labels on the front of the bins that detail what they contain for easy item retrieval.

Don’t:

Store perishable items, plants, or combustible products.

Most storage facilities feature lists of prohibited items, such as plants and food, since both attract pests. They also prohibit anything that is combustible or otherwise a fire hazard, including motor oil, gasoline, solvents, paint thinner, and fireworks. Storing such items can result in heavy fines, so check with the facility before you start packing.

Arrange items without creating at least one aisle.

Depending on the size of your self-storage unit, you’ll need to establish one or two aisles. This allows you to access bins in the back without spending serious energy and time. It’s generally best to put items you do not immediately need in the back, such as seasonal sports equipment, antique furniture, and family heirlooms, and place belongings you’ll want in the next few months, such as holiday decorations, up front.
